New Majors

Congratulations on Declaring the Psychology Major!

To contact us, email psyadvis@pitt.edu or use drop-in advising. This is the best way to reach us - please avoid emailing individual advisors.

What to Expect Once You Have Declared

The deadline for students to declare a new major is the first Friday of the fall and spring terms. Our office will receive a list of newly declared majors shortly after the add/drop period has concluded. Within the third week of the fall and spring terms all new majors will recevie an email from us with instructions to view the required orientation video and complete the new major survey. Once these onboarding steps are complete, you'll be able to schedule a preregistration appointment with one of the psychology advisors.

You may notice that once you have officially declared the psychology major you have all of the psychology advisors listed as part of your success team. We want you to have the flexibility you need to meet with an advisor at a time that works for you so you may schedule with any of the advisors.

Additionally, all students are welcome to visit drop-in advising at any point before or after declaring. You can find more information about our drop-in option on our webpage. While we are located in room 3113 Sennott Square, the psychology advisors work a hybrid schedule so virtual drop-in advising is the best way to get in touch with us. Should you wish to email our office, please use our general email address (psyadvis@pitt.edu) instead of sending emails directly to the advisors. This email address is monitored daily and you can expect a response within a 24-hour period during regular business hours (M-F, 9-5).

1-credit Course Option for New Majors

In addition, as a newly declared psychology major with fewer than 85 total credits, the Psychology Department offers you a one-credit undergraduate seminar. PSY 0011 Introduction to the Field is an interactive course that emphasizes what you can do with a psychology degree and how to make the most of your time as an undergraduate student to advance along your chosen path. The ideal student for this course is one who is somewhat undecided on a career after completion of the undergraduate degree or interested in becoming a more prepared candidate for graduate school or the work world. Because this course is so valuable in helping you to begin building your future, you are encouraged to consider this opportunity to focus on planning while developing valuable professional skills and relationships!

Undergraduate Announcements

Each Friday during the fall and spring terms our office sends an email to all declared majors with news about department events, internship and research opportunitites, graduate school programs and entry-level employment opportunities. As a new major you will automatically be subscribed to this newsletter but if you would like to receive these updates prior to declaring feel free to sign up!.

Again, welcome to the Department of Psychology. We are excited to meet you and help guide your academic decisions and career aspirations.
