Who we are: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is a nonprofit organization that strives to improve education and opportunities of lower-income families within Allegheny County through strategic partnerships with the community and faith-based organizations. We offer programs for students from kindergarten through high school that focus on supplementary learning as well as higher education.

Description: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in eager Pitt Psychology students looking to apply their academic learning with authentic field experience in our K-5 Little Warriors After-School program. Neighborhood Learning Alliance’s (NLA) After-School Program is designed to empower K-5 students to embrace their genius, establish a sense of community, and explore learning activities that enhance their health and well-being. This is done through active play, project-based learning, enriched learning experiences, and field trips.

Duties of Intern:

  • Teach positive interaction skills to K-5 students through modes of role play, storytelling, drawing, etc.
  • Conduct small-focused group activities using the curricular resources provided.
  • Collaborate with the K-5 team to create engaging learning activities.
  • Support students with understanding their emotions and effective communication.
  • Support the after-school staff with developing individual support plans.
  • Create your own focus unit that addresses the immediate needs of the students being served as a culminating project.
  • Assist with the overall planning and implementation of the daily programming and activities.
  • Assist with daily procedures and program structures.
  • Manage student attendance and activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program space.

 

Requirements:  Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in candidates that have a strong interest in and connection to underserved communities. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to learning, developing, and working outside their comfort zone. 

Clearances: FBI Background, PA State Background, PA Child Abuse, Mandatory Reporter Training, National Sex Offender Registry

General Information:  The after-school locations are located on bus lines and students can choose one of the following locations listed below.

South Region in the City

Pittsburgh Concord K-5

Pittsburgh Roosevelt K-5

East Region in the City

Pittsburgh Woolslair K-5

Pittsburgh Arsenal K-5

Number of Students: Up to four per semester
