Who we are: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is a nonprofit organization that strives to improve education and opportunities of lower-income families within Allegheny County through strategic partnerships with the community and faith-based organizations. We offer programs for students from kindergarten through high school that focus on supplementary learning as well as higher education.

Description: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in eager Pitt Psychology students looking to apply their academic learning with an authentic field experience in our High School University (HSU) program. The Neighborhood Learning Alliance High School University (HSU) Program partners with Carlow University and CCAC to provide primarily low-income and students of color access to free college courses and work-related work experience.

The Pitt Psychology intern will serve as a college and career readiness mentor for up to four 11th and/or 12th grade high school students. The mentor will serve as the key support person guiding the student through the NLA College and Career Readiness curriculum.

Duties of Intern:

  • Guide mentees through the college application process.
  • Support students with identifying and completing scholarships.
  • Conduct small-focused group activities using the curricular resources provided.
  • Collaborate with the HSU team to ensure the students are on track to meeting their personal goals.
  • Support students with understanding the college application process, career pipeline programs, and high school-to-work opportunities.
  • Conduct wellness checks with students and collaborate with the NLA team to secure outside resources needed for student success.
  • Maintain meeting and case management notes.
  • Assist with the overall planning and implementation of programming.
  • Create a college and career readiness focus unit relevant to your student support group.

 

Requirements:  Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in candidates that have a strong interest in and connection to underserved communities. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to learning, developing, and working outside their comfort zone.  Candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume.

Clearances: FBI Background, PA State Background, PA Child Abuse, Mandatory Reporter Training, National Sex Offender Registry.

General Information:  The High School University (HSU) Fall & Spring program is held at Carlow University & The Community College of Allegheny County on Saturdays. Also, interns meet with students virtually or at their PPS school during lunch.
