General Education Requirements
As with all majors, there are General Education requirements you will need to complete. All students must complete both the requirements for their chosen major as well as the required general education requirements.
Declaring Psychology as your Major
In order to declare psychology as a major, you must have done the following three things:
- Complete PSY 0010 Introduction to Psychology with a C or better
- Complete one of the required statistics courses (STAT 0200, 1000 or 1100) with a C or better
- Be enrolled in PSY 0036 Research Methods Lecture
If you have done these three, to declare psychology or to add psychology to an existing major, go to the Dietrich School Procedures and Forms website, click on "Declaring a Dietrich School Major, Minor, or Certificate", and fill out the form, or go directly to the form.
Psychology Degree Requirements

Below is a summary of the requirements.
Foundation courses: The Psychology major has 4 courses that need to be taken in order. It is important to be aware of this sequence to plan your course selection and so that you can graduate on time.
- Introduction to Psychology (PSY 0010) AND Statistics course (STAT 0200, 1000 or 1100)
- PSY 0036: Research Methods Lecture
- PSY 0037: Research Methods LAB
- PSY Advanced Lab, also called "laboratory methods course" - there are multiple options to pick from
Core Courses: You need to take 4 out of 5:
- PSY 0105 Introduction to Social Psychology
- PSY 0205 Psychopathology
- PSY 0310 Developmental Psychology
- PSY 0422 Cognitive Psychology
- PSY 0505 Introduction to Biopsychology OR NROSCI 1000 Introduction to Neuroscience
Upper-level courses: You need to take two 1000-level courses. Certain courses cannot count for this. Many of these have prerequisites.
Elective: You need to take one elective.
